Landesplattenberg EngiThe Engi mountain was not only of economic importance for Engi, it also attracted geologists and paleontologists from all over the world. In 1565, the Landesplattenberg Engi was first mentioned in a document and in the 17th century it was an important source of income for the state of Glarus and the village of Engi. From the 18th century onwards, slate tablets and tables were demonstrably exported as far as Holland and England, and many a slate product also found its way from there to the East and West Indies, as it is said in old documents. On January 1, 1834, the trade in shale was placed under state supervision. Since then, the Plattenberg in Engi has been known as the "Landesplattenberg Engi". He experienced very good times, but also difficult times. In 1961, operations had to be discontinued for economic reasons.
The tour starts at the Landesplattenberg Engi pavilion, just before leaving the village of Engi-Hinterdorf. The exact address is Sernftalstrasse 109, 8765 Engi. You will find plenty of parking spaces at the Landesplattenberg pavilion. If you arrive by public transport, you can reach the Landesplattenberg Engi with its own stop "Engi, Landesplattenberg".
At the pavilion you will be met by your group guide. The entire tour lasts two and a half hours and begins with the ascent to the tunnel entrance. For this half-hour walk and the visit to the magnificent slate caverns, you need good shoes and warm clothing - the temperature inside the mountain is between 7 and 11 degrees Celsius, the humidity is 90%. A normal physical constitution is a prerequisite for visiting the mine.
